Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku is reportedly set for a £75 million transfer to Inter Milan, after agreeing a deal worth £180,000-a-week.
According to a report from The Sun, Manchester United superstar Romelu Lukaku is closing in on exit from Old Trafford, as he has agreed a contract offer of £180,000 per week from Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan. A deal is believed to be in the works, with United ready to sell the striker if the Italians pay £75 million.
Lukaku joined Manchester United in the summer of 2017 from Everton, costing the Red Devils an initial fee of £75 million. The 26-year-old enjoyed an impressive debut campaign at Old Trafford, netting 27 goals and setting up 9 more in 51 matches.
However, this past season saw the Belgian international slip behind Marcus Rashford in the pecking order under current manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, after a series of underwhelming displays. Lukaku ended the 2018-19 season with 15 goals against his name from 45 matches in all competitions.
This has led to Lukaku seeking a transfer away from Manchester United. The 26-year-old has previously spoken of his admiration for Serie A and sparked intense speculations of a summer transfer to Inter Milan after he heaped praises on the Nerazzurri’s manager Antonio Conte following his recent appointment.
Conte had tried to sign Lukaku when he was in-charge at Chelsea, but was beaten to the chase by Manchester United. However, he is intent on bringing the 26-year-old to Inter this summer. To that end, the Serie A heavyweights were willing to offer star striker Mauro Icardi in exchange for Lukaku’s services, but had been rebuffed by United.
However, Inter’s pursuit of the Belgian international could be set to bear fruit. According to The Sun, the Nerazzurri have been able to reach an agreement with Lukaku over a contract. As part of the deal, the former Chelsea and Everton star will be earning wages of £180,000-a-week, which is a step down from his current salary of £225,000 per week at Manchester United.
The report adds that Lukaku cut short his holidays in order to hold talks with Manchester United over his future and the club officials agreed to let him go in the summer, provided that Inter match the £75 million transfer fee that they had paid Everton to sign him two years ago.
Lukaku is contracted with Manchester United till 2022, but it seems like his time at Old Trafford is nearing an end. Following recent developments, the 26-year-old seems very close to completing a switch to Inter Milan, subject to the Serie A giants meeting the Red Devils’ valuation of the striker.
