Real Madrid are reportedly plotting a bid worth €80 million to sign Frenkie de Jong, who is also being targeted by Manchester United.
According to a report by Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Real Madrid are ready to step up their pursuit of Frenkie de Jong. Los Blancos are ready to lodge a bid worth €80 million for the Dutch sensation, who is also the subject of interest from the likes of Manchester United, Barcelona and others.
De Jong has shot into the limelight in recent months, having enjoying a solid 2017-18 campaign with Ajax. Despite injury problems cutting short his participation over the course of the season to an extent, the player has shown enough quality and potential to become a hot property in the transfer market.
In fact, de Jong was highly sought-after in the summer transfer window, with Barcelona showing interest in him. But, the 21-year-old, who recently made his debut for the Dutch National Side, ended up staying at Ajax. The interest in him though, has only grown, with Real Madrid and Manchester United now leading the race to sign him.
At Real Madrid, the need to sign a midfielder has arisen from the fact that Luka Modric faces an uncertain future at the Bernabeu. While there is interest in the newly crowned The Best FIFA Men’s Player of the Year, the fact that the Croat is in the twilight of his career also prompts Los Blancos to scour the market for a long-term successor.
With Mateo Kovacic somewhat likely to leave on a permanent transfer next summer, de Jong is a viable target for Real Madrid. But, the European champions also face stiff competition from Manchester United in pursuit of the midfielder.
The uncertainties surrounding Paul Pogba’s future might only grow as the season progresses, with the Frenchman highly likely to depart from Old Trafford next summer, as things stand. Manchester United have thus, been forced into the transfer market for a creative midfielder, and de Jong fits the bill.
Real Madrid though, are seemingly taking the first steps to usurp Manchester United and other suitors in the race to sign the player. The Spanish heavyweights are ready to put an €80 million bid on the table for Ajax, who have thus far remained coy on the topic of de Jong’s future.
But, the impending bid is a statement of intent from Real Madrid, who haven’t really splashed the big bucks in the transfer market in recent windows. Meanwhile, in addition to Manchester United, the likes of PSG, Tottenham, Manchester City and Barcelona are keen on the Dutch international as well.
For now though, Real Madrid are the leaders in his pursuit, with Manchester United closely following suit. The race to sign Frenkie de Jong is spicing up with every passing week, and it remains to be seen where the player ends up next, as speculation continues to intensify.
