Manchester United are reportedly plotting an offer worth £80 million to sign Harry Maguire from Leicester City on deadline day of the English window
According to an exclusive from Daily Express, Manchester United are ready to step up their pursuit of English international Harry Maguire at this late juncture of the summer transfer window in England. The Red Devils are set to table an £80 million deadline day bid to land the Leicester City defender.
Manchester United have been in desperate search of a centre-back this summer, with Jose Mourinho eager to bolster his defensive options all through the window. But, their attempts have not borne any fruit thus far, even though several players have been heavily linked with them over the last few months.
With time running out for the Red Devils to complete the elusive signing, Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire seem to be the centre-backs who are looking the likeliest to make their way to Old Trafford. And, Manchester United are all set to launch the offensive for the English international.
Maguire has enjoyed a stunning rise to prominence over the last twelve months or so. He first enjoyed a solid 2017-18 season with Leicester City, ending the campaign as their Player of the Year. But, the major turning point in his career has to be the World Cup campaign, wherein he was one of the best performers for England.
His exploits piqued the interest of Manchester United, with the player’s ball playing abilities as well as aerial prowess potentially making him the ideal foil for Eric Bailly. It has also been reported that Marcos Rojo is set to be sold by the Premier League heavyweights to make room for Maguire.
But, recent reports had suggested that Leicester City were confident of keeping the 25-year-old at the King Power Stadium beyond the summer transfer window. However, with time running out, Manchester United seem to have decided to break the bank to land the English international.
The reports suggests that the Foxes want more than the £75 million that Liverpool paid to sign Virgil van Dijk earlier this year. And, Manchester United are ready to break the record transfer fee for a centre-back by tabling a bid worth £80 million.
With the amount well in excess of Leicester’s asking price, Manchester United could finally succeed in landing a centre-back before the August 9 deadline. With Maguire also hinting towards a possible exit recently, a deal may be on the cards. It remains to be seen if the two clubs can finally reach an agreement over the transfer of the English international.
