Transfer News: Manchester United lead the chase for Toni Kroos

Manchester United are believed to the leading the chase for Toni Kroos, who is reportedly facing an uncertain future at Real Madrid.

According to yet another transfer claim from Don Balon, Manchester United have overtaken cross-town rivals Manchester City in the race to sign Toni Kroos. The German international has been one of many Real Madrid superstars to be linked with a move away from Santiago Bernabeu as the European champions brace themselves for a potential mass exodus this summer.

Los Blancos have been already dealt with huge blows earlier this summer as Portuguese sensation Cristiano Ronaldo joined Juventus while Zinedine Zidane abruptly called an end to his highly successful three-year coaching stint at the Bernabeu.

And following the arrival of the newly appointed Julen Lopetegui, many of the key players face an uncertain future at the club, chief among which are believed to be Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos.

Manchester United have been one of the many clubs credited with interest in the German star along with Premier League champions Manchester City. However, it is understood that the Red Devils have recently stepped up their pursuit of the former Bayern Munich midfielder with City coach Pep Guardiola being highly aware of it.

That being said, it has been United who have gone through a relatively quiet transfer window thus far. Fred has been the only big name signing this summer with young right-back Diogo Dalot and backup goalkeeper Lee Grant being the other players to have arrived at Old Trafford.

And thus, the prospect of United splurging a big-money move within the remaining period of the ongoing transfer window is certainly not far-fetched.

Jose Mourinho has already stressed the need of another top-quality midfielder this summer following the retirement of Michael Carrick at the end of last season. And Toni Kroos, given his magnificent CV, could be an ideal candidate for the Red Devils.

Real Madrid, themselves, haven’t denied the possibility of a Kroos exit this summer. In turn, they have reportedly slapped a €120 million price-tag on the German international.

Even though Manchester United have been reluctant to pay over €80 million for Kroos, it’s fair to point out that the addition of the world-class midfielder could undoubtedly escalate their chances of posing a strong threat to Manchester City next season.

The Citizens have looked almost unbeatable under the leadership of Guardiola but with Pogba and Kroos controlling the affairs in midfield, United could well become one of the most feared sides in Europe in the forthcoming campaign.

On the flip side of things, it’s still doubtful whether Real Madrid will want to let go of their prized midfielder especially after losing Ronaldo and Zidane earlier this summer. Thus, it will be interesting to see how this transfer saga pans out in the next couple of weeks.
