Manchester United are reportedly considering making a move for Croatia’s World Cup star Ante Rebic this summer.
Manchester United are preparing a £44 million offer for Croatian forward Ante Rebic, who plays for German outfit Eintracht Frankfurt, as per reports from the Mirror.
The 24-year old attacker is understood to have caught the eye of Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho with his performances in the recently concluded 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. And the Portuguese is now considering the possibility of bringing him to the Old Trafford this summer.
Rebic joined Eintracht on a season-long loan from Italian club Fiorentina back in the summer of 2016. And after an impressive first term, his loan spell was extended for another year in July 2017, with a clause inserted to make the transfer permanent this summer.
The Croatian winger had a solid 2017/18 campaign for the German outfit, as he finished with 9 goals and 3 assists in 28 appearances across all competitions. Two of those goals were scored in the finals of the DFB Pokal against German champions Bayern Munich, as Rebic led Eintracht to their first ever silverware for thirty years.
The 24-year old managed to carry his club form to the international level, playing an important role in Croatia’s magical run to the final of the World Cup. While he managed to score just once in his six appearances in Russia, he was a vital cog in Zlatko Dalic’s side, causing problems to opponents with his pace and movement.
And that hasn’t gone unnoticed by Manchester United manager Mourinho, who was working as an analyst for Russia Today during the World Cup.
The Red Devils have already made three signings this summer, with the arrival of full-back Diogo Dalot, midfielder Fred and veteran goalkeeper Lee Grant. However, the club are understood to be in the market for reinforcements in the attacking third of the pitch, with the right-flank being a particular area of concern for the manager.
Manchester United have recently been linked with a move for Mourinho’s compatriot Goncalo Guedes, while the customary links to Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale have once again been doing the rounds, as they do every transfer window.
Rebic, though, would prove to be a much cheaper alternative, given that he is likely to cost United somewhere in the range of £44 million. In comparison, PSG are understood to be demanding €80 million, while Bale is expected command a fee in excess of £90 million.
The 24-year old, who has three years left on his contract with Eintracht, may not be as big a star as Bale, but has proven that he can cut it out on the biggest of the stages. And he could turn out be a great piece of business for Manchester United in the long run. However, they will have to beat competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal, who are also monitoring the Croatian forward.
