Real Madrid are set to clash with arch rivals Barcelona in pursuit of Tottenham ace playmaker Christian Eriksen.
Real Madrid have decided to enter the race for the signing of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen, who is also a summer transfer target for Barcelona, as per reports from Spanish outlet Don Balon.
The 26-year old has been in fine form for the North Londoners this season and has established himself as one of the best creative midfielders across Europe. In the 2017/18 campaign, Eriksen has come up with more than impressive returns of 14 goals and 10 assists in 40 matches across all competitions.
His rise from a promising young talent when he joined Tottenham from Ajax in 2013 to becoming one of the best playmakers in the game has not gone unnoticed as two of the biggest clubs in the world, Real Madrid and Barcelona are reportedly keen on landing him in the summer.
Barcelona are understood to be viewing the Danish international as a direct replacement for legendary midfielder Andres Iniesta, who is in the twilight of his career. The 33-year old has stated in the past that he wants to retire with his boyhood club but recent reports have claimed that the Spain international is not averse to a move in the summer, which has cast a sense of uncertainty over his future.
However, with Philippe Coutinho already at the club and promising midfielder Arthur arriving from Brazilian side Gremio, the question of where Eriksen would fit in does arise.
Real Madrid, on the other hand, are keen to wrestle back the La Liga title that is set to end up in their arch rivals’ laps this term and club president Florentino Perez sees infusing his squad with some fresh blood as an important step in that direction.
And to that end, he has identified Eriksen as his next Galactico signing for the next summer window. The report also goes on to claim that the Madrid president would be open to the idea of selling either of Luka Modric, who is in his thirties or Toni Kroos, who is also touching thirties, in order to open up a space in the squad for the 77-time capped Denmark international.
Eriksen has a contract with Tottenham that runs till the summer of 2020. The main creative spark of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad, Eriksen is seen as an indispensable member by the club and it would be very hard for any club to pry him away from the clutches of the North London outfit.
However, Real Madrid have had a history of signing Spurs’ best players, having captured the likes of Luka Modric and Gareth Bale. And with a new stadium to be funded, chairman Daniel Levy might be open to a sale provided either of Madrid or Barca come up with a huge offer.
