Borussia Dortmund are reportedly plotting a sensational move to re-sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan, whose future at Manchester United is uncertain
According to a report by BBC, Borussia Dortmund are scouring the possibility of bringing back Henrikh Mkhitaryan to the Signal Iduna Park. The Armenian playmaker has fallen out of favour with Jose Mourinho, having been excluded from two of the last three Manchester United matchday squads.
Mkhitaryan joined Manchester United after three successful campaigns with Borussia Dortmund, even winning the Bundesliga Player’s Player Of The Year in his final season with the club, having bagged 11 goals and 15 assists in the German top flight.
His stint at Manchester United though, has been topsy turvy. After failing to start any competitive game for the first three months upon his arrival at Old Trafford, Mkhitaryan showed signs of promise in the second half of the campaign in the 2016-17 season, even finding himself in the Europa League Team of the Season.
The 28-year-old began the current season with a bang as well, with five assists in the first three games. But, his campaign has since gone pear-shaped, with just a solitary assist and two goals in 14 outings. He has also found himself falling out of favour with Jose Mourinho, who recently shed some light on the same.

“I was not happy with his last performances. It’s not one or two, I am talking about three, four or five. He started well this season but his performance levels, goalscoring, assists, high pressing, bringing the team with him as number 10, were decreasing step by step.”
While creativity has still been found wanting in Mkhitaryan’s absence over the last two weeks, it is unclear where the Armenian international stands going forward. With uncertainty surrounding his position at Old Trafford, Borussia Dortmund have made it known that they would like to sign him back.
Mkhitaryan had enjoyed a remarkable spell with the Bundesliga heavyweights, and with the club not shying away from bringing some of their former stalwarts back – Shinji Kagawa, Nuri Sahin and Mario Gotze have all re-signed in the last three years – a move for Mkhitaryan cannot be ruled out.
Dortmund have been lacking on the creative side this season, as well as parts of last term, and with Mkhitaryan already having previous experience of playing in La Liga, he is unlikely to take long to adapt to the challenges in Bundesliga.
What Mourinho would be hoping is for the player to take his manager’s comments in his stride and give a fitting reaction with performances on the field. If not, Manchester United could possibly let go of Mkhitaryan next summer, and set their sights on signing a replacement – perhaps a certain Mesut Ozil.
