Manchester United are set to hand manager Jose Mourinho a bumper new five-year deal that will keep him at Old Trafford till June 2022.
According to a report in TransferMarketWeb, Jose Mourinho is set to be offered a bumper new long-term contract by Manchester United. The new deal, should the Portuguese choose to sign it, will see him commit his future at Old Trafford till June 2022.
Mourinho joined Manchester United little over a year ago as he took charge of a club looking for inspiration, and a way back into the Champions League. Having himself come off a disastrous ending to his second spell as Chelsea boss, the task at hand for the Portuguese manager was a sizable one.
Mourinho’s first season in charge was definitely not without its obstacles, though, as the Red Devils often struggled to put overly defensive sides away at Old Trafford, equalling the Premier League record of most draws at home – 10.
On top of that, injuries proved to be a great hurdle in Manchester United’s campaign as well. But the quality of football has arguably improved to a more exciting, faster pace that the Old Trafford faithfuls associate the club with.
And, at the end of a grueling, long winding campaign, one can safely say that Mourinho has enjoyed a successful maiden campaign at Old Trafford, as the 54-year-old guided Manchester United to two major honours and qualification into the group stage of next season’s Champions League.
The double-trophy haul also made Mourinho the first Manchester United manager to win silverware in his debut season in charge at the club. And having impressed the club’s hierarchy in his first 12 months at Old Trafford, the Portuguese manager is now set to be handed a new long-term deal.
The report suggests that Manchester United are eager to tie down Mourinho beyond his initial three-year contract and have, thus, put together the new deal that will run till June 2022. The Premier League club expect him to put pen to paper on the contract.
Mourinho, himself, has previously insisted that he would not hesitate before signing a new deal with Manchester United and that he expects to stay at Old Trafford beyond the three years in his current contract.
The extension is likely to be greeted with a lot of enthusiasm by Manchester United fans, the majority of whom seem to have taken a liking to Mourinho, especially ahead of a busy summer in which the manager will look to continue rebuilding his squad to challenge for more silverware next season.
