Real Madrid have given Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea a May deadline to decide on a return to Spain, as per reports.
The Daily Mirror have reported that Real Madrid have given Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea time until May to make his mind up over a possible return to Spain before they can move on to other targets.
De Gea has been the cornerstone of Manchester United’s first team plans in recent seasons, and his performances in goal have been key to the side’s fortunes. Often called into action in some of the most crucial juncture of games, De Gea has bailed the Red Devils out with several world class saves over the years.
2016/17 has been relatively quiet for De Gea, though, with Manchester United looking more assured at the back in comparison to the last few seasons. However, he has still stood up and made himself count whenever called into action to reinforce his value for his side.
With De Gea being so crucial to Manchester United’s fortunes, he has been the club’s Player of the Season for each of last seasons, and it goes without saying that he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
However, his sensational performances for Manchester United have also put the spotlight on De Gea, and Real Madrid are reported to back in the market for the Spain number one, after failing in their pursuit of the shot stopper due to delay in paperwork.
However, Los Blancos are in desperate need of some goalkeeping reinforcements as the summer transfer window approaches. Neither Keylor Navas, nor his deputy Kiko Casilla have managed to impress Zinedine Zidane this season by blowing hot and cold between the sticks.
The duo have managed to keep just 7 clean sheets between them in 26 La Liga appearances, and more alarmingly they have been prone to some inexplicable howlers that have put their side in trouble on several occasions this season.
As a result, a goalkeeper is believed to be top priority for Real Madrid, and they have made De Gea their number one target. However, with the position being so crucial for the Spanish heavyweights, they want a definitive answer from the Manchester United goalkeeper by May.
Otherwise, they will move on to their next target Thibaut Courtois, who is believed to be willing to make the switch to Real Madrid. The reports states that De Gea has met with his agent Jorge Mendes, who has outlined the situation to him.
Real Madrid can start speaking to De Gea and Mendes by offering £50 million, as per the report, but the final decision rests on De Gea. Much will depend on Manchester United’s qualification for the Champions League, and if they manage to do so, De Gea could well stay put at Old Trafford in the summer.
