Anthony Martial is reportedly disgruntled by Jose Mourinho’s treatment towards him at Manchester United and could be on the brink of leaving Old Trafford.
The Daily Mirror have reported that Anthony Martial is frustrated by the treatment being meted out towards him by Jose Mourinho and feels his Manchester United manager is trying to push him out of the club.
A successful breakthrough debut campaign at Manchester United has been followed by a inexplicably poor second season for Anthony Martial. The Frenchman was the star for the Red Devils last season as he gave a fitting reply to his skeptics by ending the 2015/16 season as the club’s leading goalscorer with 17 goals in all competitions.
Still growing and showing a lot of promise, Martial was expected to grow even further under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho. However, he has endured a largely frustrating time under his new Manchester United manager this season having been overlooked from the matchday squad itself on several occasions.
Indeed, Martial’s performances haven’t been the same this season, scoring just two goals in 711 minutes of Premier League action, starting just 9 of the 23 matches that Manchester United have played in the English top flight.
Martial, though, feels that Jose Mourinho has made him a scapegoat for the team’s failures this season and is attempting to drive him out of the club. Moreover, he is of the opinion that the Portuguese was targeting him when he said that his players “lacked a winning mentality” earlier this week.
His poor performances for Manchester United this season have repeatedly resulted in him being a target of speculations, with reports painting conflicting pictures. While some say that his representatives are unhappy with his situation at Old Trafford, others claim that he is determined to fight for his place.
However, after being overlooked yet again by Mourinho for Hull City’s trip to Old Trafford last weekend, it now looks like Martial may have had enough, and is ready to move on from an increasingly difficult situation at Manchester United.
Paris Saint-Germain want to offer Martial an escape route back to France are interested in signing the highly rated forward, according to the report, and Manchester United will not stand in his way if he wants the move to happen.
The French champions have uncharacteristically struggled in their defence of the Ligue 1 title, with the likes of Angel Di Maria, Javier Pastore and Hatem Ben Arfa failing to make an impact at the Parc des Princes this season.
The signing of Julian Draxler has turned out to be a successful one thus far and Goncalo Guedes too is showing signs of promise after joining the club in January. But, Emery is eyeing further additions with Martial lined up possibly to replace Edinson Cavani upfront.
Martial has reportedly been identified as a target for PSG and he could well be on his way back to France should he continue to be overlooked by Mourinho. It will now be interesting to see if he fights to claim a regular place in the Manchester United first team or takes a way out the exit door at Old Trafford.
