Liverpool are reportedly keen on Hoffenheim FC’s Swiss international Fabian Schar, who is also wanted by Inter Milan
Daily Star have run a story that Liverpool are interested in Hoffenheim centre-back Fabian Schar. The Swiss international is now on the radar of the iconic Premier League club, with Inter Milan also interested in securing a transfer for the player.
Fabian Schar is a FC Basel academy graduate, who made the move to Bundesliga, joining Hoffenheim in the summer of 2015. The player was able to lock down a regular spot in the centre of the Hoffenheim defence with 24 Bundesliga appearances last season.
Schar has only featured in 3 of Hoffenheim’s 7 league fixtures up until now with not so convincing performances in those appearances. But the 24-year-old has shown a lot of promise in the past and was linked with a move to Arsenal over the summer.
The Gunners were rumoured to be aiming to bring the player over to Emirates to reunite the player with former Basel teammate Granit Xhaka. However, Arsenal ended up signing German international Shkodran Mustafi, who has amazed the Gooners with his steady performances thus far.
Liverpool kept their first clean sheet of the season on Monday night in a 0-0 stalemate against Manchester United but Jurgen Klopp is reportedly looking for additions to the central defence. Liverpool have been linked with Schar’s club teammate Niklas Sule and, as per the report, Fabian Schar is now on the Reds radar.
The player is likely to be available for cut-price fee of £9m, which is something that will not trouble the likes of Liverpool and Inter Milan in case they do decide to make an official approach for the player.
Liverpool, though, face competition from Inter Milan, who are also on the lookout for defensive additions. Both potential suitors have let in 10 goals in the 8 league matches thus far and are likely to look toward Schar as a potential addition in order to improve their defensive displays.
Liverpool scouts were reported to be watching the player in action during the international break as Switzerland faced Hungary and Albania. Schar is contracted to Hoffenheim till 2019 and a January deal looks highly unlikely but Liverpool are quietly confident of securing a deal for the player at the end of the current season.
It would be interesting to see if there is a spark in the story or the rumour is a smoke just like Schar’s link to Arsenal over the summer. The player, though, is considered an optimum mix of physicality and technique and could do with a move to the Premier League, which seems to suit the player’s style more with the high tempo style in England.
