There was strong reaction from the media and the fans as they were large cries for immediate action to be taken so that the tournament doesn’t go in the danger of being marred by extended violence from a certain section of fans who are trying to hamper the global image of football. Soon, UEFA handed the Russians with a suspended disqualification and a fine of €150,000 for their transgressions.
According to a report in The Guardian, UEFA’s disciplinary body met and decided strong actions are necessary.
“A suspended disqualification of the Russian national team from Uefa Euro 2016 for the crowd disturbances. In accordance with Article 20 of the Uefa disciplinary regulations this disqualification is suspended until the end of the tournament.
“Such suspension will be lifted if incidents of a similar nature (crowd disturbances) happen inside the stadium at any of the remaining matches of the Russian team during the tournament.”
Fans were visibly concerned even after the sanctions as any other fan altercations might adversely affect the tournament and future tournaments.
