Manchester United have identified Ilkay Gundogan as a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick.
Michael Carrick has been a regular figure in the Manchester United line-up under Louis Van Gaal. The Englishman has played an important role in Manchester Uniteda s progress this season. In his absence, Manchester United had to force Rooney to play a deeper role in the midfield against Chelsea and eventually United lost the game as their midfield was unable to outplay the Chelsea defenders.
But the midfielder will be turning 34 in the summer and sooner or later, Manchester United will have to bring in a solid replacement for the England international. According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United have identified Borussia Dortmund midfielder, Ilkay Gundogan, as a suitable replacement. Apparently, Manchester United have been keeping an eye on the German midfielder.
Michael Carrick was rewarded for his performances by a new contract in March. However, the contract only extended his stay at the club until next season. as the midfielder will turn 34-years old this summer, Van Gaal cannot rely on the former Tottenham player to play each game, week-in week-out. The manager is now eyeing Gundogan to take some load off Carricka s shoulder.
Gundogan, 24, runs out of his Borussia Dortmund contract next season and with Jurgen Klopp certain to leave the club at the end of the season, Gundogan will be weighing his options. If the Germany international wants to leave the club, Dortmund will be keen to cash in on him in the upcoming transfer window.
