I-League division two met with a surprising and unexpected conclusion as ONGC and United SikkimAi??got promoted.
With a clutch of teams participating from different parts of India, few expected ONGC to repeat their performance from two seasons back. Credit must be given to ONGC coach Caetano Pinho who strung together a well organized side which refused to let in goals during qualifers. United Sikkim was pointed out by numerous coaches as favourites for promotion and they did justice to that tag by becoming the first club from Sikkim to ever get promoted to I-League. United Sikkim’s foreign recruits were in sparling form as the Snow Lions finished the league as top scorers. Next season, For the first time, Indian football fans will see two teams from North East India in i-League.
First Phase ai??i?? Siliguri
Last seasonai??i??s relegated side, ONGC was allowed a direct entry in final round of I-League division two and they started by facing off against Aizawl FC. Despite being relatively new entrant in Indian football scene, the side from Mizoram had impressed in preliminary rounds and was expected to notch up some surprising results in final round. Instead, ONGC upset all predictions by thumping AFC 5-0 with ex-Indian international Jatin Singh Bisht scoring twice. The Oil men continued their good form by dispatching Mohammedan SC 1-0 in the second match. Their winning run was halted by United Sikkim, as ONGC slumped to a 4-2 loss.
Things got worse against Royal Wahingdoh as Chapmanai??i??s team ran out 4-1 winners. It was this match that would eventually prove to be pivotal in Division Two this season. With just one minute left on the clock in second half Royal introduced their fourth foreigner on the field. This was a direct breach of AIFF rules as only three foreigners are allowed on field at one point of time. ONGC successfully appealed and overturned a meek defeat into a 3-0 win. Twin draws against Vasco and Kalighat MS ensured the 2010 division-2 champions finished first leg in a good position.

For Royal Wahingdoh, that mistake against ONGC would prove to be very, very costly. Unlike last season, Royal managed to replicate their good form from prelims in final round as they began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Vasco, following it up with a 2-1 win over Kalighat MS. Royal were mentally hit after their debacle against ONGC as they lost to United Sikkim in their next match. A double from Satiyasen Singh ensured their 3-1 defeat of Mohammedan. Another solid 3-0 win over Aizawl ensured that they ended their first phase on an upbeat note.
It was a topsy-turvy ride for Aloke Mukherjeeai??i??s Mohammedan SC. The Black and Whitesai??i?? unbeaten streak of over 30 matches was extended as they defeated Kalighat MS in the opening match. The streak ended against ONGC but the former Federation Cup champions came back strongly with consecutive wins over Vasco and Aizawl FC. Foreign striker pairing of Alfred and Stanley found the back of the next regularly while likes of Safar Sardar and Surabuddin Mullik also played well. Mohammedan was bested by Royal Wahingdoh but ended their matches strongly by outplaying United Sikkim to win 2-0.
A number of coaches had marked out Baichung Bhutiaai??i??s United Sikkim as the most dangerous team and they stayed true to the expectations by winning first four matches. They defeated Vasco, Kalighat MS, ONGC and Royal Wahingdoh in back to back matches, scoring 12 goals in the process. Their run was halted by a draw against Aizawl FC and they slumped to their first loss against Mohammedan in last match. USFCai??i??s foreigners, Quinton Jacob, Daniel Bidemi and Babatunde were all in great form.
Aizawl FC took some time to adjust to football against stronger teams and they failed to avoid losses in all but one match in the first phase. Their best performances included the 4-3 loss to Mohammedan when they came back from 4-0 down to score thrice in the second half. The Mizo boys also stopped a rampaging United Sikkim team in penultimate round.
There have been numerous reports in media about Kalighat MS trying to professionalize themselves, the club also made a decent account in their debut season. The Arun Ghosh coached side lost three matches but defeated Aizawl FC 3-0. They also earned a 3-3 draw against Vasco despite trailing 3-1 at half time. Wahid Abdullah and Michael Tayo, two players who were arrested by police a few days back, pushed back their personal problems and performed admirably.
One of the best supported clubs in Goa, Vasco SC, failed to match their performance of last season as they won just once in final round. A late goal from Seityasen prevented them from defeating Royal Wahingdoh but they bounced back with a win over Aizawl FC. That win seemed to give them some confidence, as they earned back to back draws against Mohammedan and ONGC.
Second Phase ai??i?? Gangtok
The teams from North East were expected to do well in second phase as matches were held in familiar conditions. After gathering just one point in first phase Aizawl FCai??i??s dreams of promotion were as good as gone and they played for pride. Despite losing their opening match to Royal, Aizawl bounced back in style and curved out an exciting 3-2 win over Vasco. Youngster Michael Lalremruata was in inspired form in that match, scoring a brace. Michael again struck a brace in the next match but Aizawl lost out to Kalighat MS narrowly. They fought hard against Mohammedan but paid the price of a missed spot kick, slumping to a 1-0 loss. They followed up that loss with another defeat against the local team. For a club which lacked experience Aizawl FC can take away plenty of positives from their maiden campaign. Michael and David LalrinmuanaAi??were easilyAi??two of the revelations of this year’s division two.
Another debutant, Kalighat MS can also leave the field with their heads held high. Despite losing their first match to ONGC, Kalighat proved to be an extremely gritty customer as they ground out draws against local favourites United Sikkim and Mohammedan. They won against Aizawl FC as well as Royal. A win in their last match against Vasco ensured a 4th place for Kalighat.Ai??With reports suggesting that Kalighat MS are looking to set up their own academy, future certainly looks bright for the club.
Vasco improved their performance graph in second phase but were finally let down by their poor performance of Siliguri phase. Agnelo Colacoai??i??s late goal ensured that they started the second phase with an important win over Mohammedan. They drew against United Sikkim but succumbed to a shock loss against Aizawl FC. The 3-0 loss to ONGC more or less ended their hopes of a promotion but they did play party pooper to Royal Wahingdoh by defeating them 2-1 in the following match. Overall, they failed to match the performance from last season when they narrowly missed out on promotion.
United Sikkim, the table toppers from Siliguri were expected to sweep away all opponents in front of their home fans. Instead, their form deserted them initially. The Snow Lions failed to win their first three matches, losing to Royal Wahingdoh in the NE derby and drawing matches against Kalighat MS and Vasco. United finally came to their elements in a do-or-die match against ONGC with goals from Babatunde and Bidemi.
A unique thing happened after their ONGC match. Sensing promotion, Sikkim state government declared that government employees will be granted leaves if they showed Unitedai??i??s match tickets. As a result United Sikkimai??i??s home support grew even stronger. United Sikkimai??i??s performance graph also went up steadily as they earned a priceless 2-1 win over table toppers ONGC. A hattrick from Jacobs led to a 4-2 win over Aizawl FC in the next match as United Sikkim were firmly back on track for a promotion. United faced off against Mohammedan in a tension packed finale. Mohammedan needed a victory but the Snow Lions would progress if they avoided a loss. In front of their home fans United took the lead as Daniel Bidemi converted a first half spot kick. Mohammedan equalized in second half. The home fans spent some anxious moments before the referee blew the final whistle. United Sikkim were in I-League.

Carlton Chapmanai??i??s Royal Wahingdoh once again failed to deliver on the big stage as they succumbed to poor performance when it mattered. An encouraging win against United Sikkim eventually proved to be deceptive as Wahingdoh went on to lose four of their next five matches. Royalai??i??s chance of promotion smoked away when they lost to Vasco. Chapman had managed to retain some of the better players from last seasonai??i??s squad but it remains to be seen if players like Seityasen, Chencho and Jackichand stay in Royal for one more season.
Mohammedan SC overcame the fatigue of playing over 30 matches in the space of two and half months by dishing out some strong performances in Gangtok phase. Despite starting off with a loss, Mohammedan won two of their next three matches taking prized scalps of Royal and Aizawl FC on the way. Their goal-less draw against ONGC, coupled with United Sikkimai??i??s victory against Aizawl made their ultimate fixture against USFC a virtual final match. A draw in that match ended Mohammedan’s dreams.
Last, but not the least ONGC, the Oil men upset all expectations and dished out an exceptional performance in both phases to become the first team to clinch promotion. They began the Gangtok phase with a bang, winning their first three matches and almost ensuring a top two finish. A loss against United Sikkim somewhat upset the applecart but they ensured that they went up with two draws in their next two matches. ONGC had the best defensive record in division-2 this season and a lot of credit must go to their goalkeeper Prasenjit Ghosh for this.
