Cristian Romero edging closer to Tottenham exit

Tottenham are at a huge risk of losing skipper Cristian Romero owing to a revelation about a release clause in his contract.

Tottenham’s dire situation got even worse as Cristian Romero has a release clause in his deal, according to his father, Victor Romero. The club could be at a huge risk of losing their captain, as per Football Insider, with a host of clubs already looking closely at the 27-year-old’s situation.

Tottenham added to their relegation troubles by losing to Sunderland on Sunday, and that result kept them inside the relegation zone for the first time since 2009. With some upcoming games of significant value, there’s a real chance they might go down, and with that, potentially lose a host of their star players.

New manager Roberto De Zerbi, who signed a five-year deal, has been told to keep hold of names like Micky van de Ven, Lucas Bergvall and Cristian Romero, with the trio likely to be among the first players to be poached away. Now there are some details revealed about the latter, with his father, Victor Romero, insisting there’s a release clause in the new deal that he signed last summer.

Victor Romero said, “He has two more years on his contract with Tottenham and a very high release clause. The English club isn’t going to let him go for free; it’s between £37.8m–£53m. For me, they’ll want to recover what they invested.”

The release clause changes the dynamics of Romero’s future as well as Tottenham’s powers in keeping hold of him. The Argentine defender could potentially leave irrespective of relegation, which could alert the many teams that are interested in signing the 27-year-old.

Tottenham were reportedly seeking at least £40–45 million, as per a previous report, although the equation changes with the reveal of the release clause. There’s a higher chance that the Argentine leads an exodus, particularly if Spurs were to go down.

Which clubs are interested in Cristian Romero?

For long periods, Spanish giants Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have shown big interest in the 27-year-old, and they could once again enter the equation for the experienced centre-back. Manchester United were mentioned as suitors as per multiple stories in the recent past, as they could angle a move for the Premier League-proven defender.

Overall, Romero could have plenty of opportunities in the summer to leave Tottenham, especially if they end up going down. In the case of surviving relegation, there’s a small chance De Zerbi could convince him to stay, but currently, all fingers point to a potential departure, especially after the reveal of the release clause in his contract.
