Tottenham want at least €50 million to sell Cristian Romero

Atletico Madrid will have to fork out at least €50 million if they want to sign Tottenham defensive mainstay Cristian Romero.

Atletico Madrid have been keen on acquiring the services of Cristian Romero for some time now. The Argentine international is a top target for Diego Simeone’s team, as they look to reinforce their backline ahead of next season.

According to a report from Fichajes, the Madrid-based outfit were looking to secure his services for a cut-price fee, but that looks unlikely as Tottenham have no intentions of negotiating his departure in the first place. They want at least €50 million to start talks about his future, and the final fee could rise even further.

Cristian Romero has not looked back since joining Tottenham in the summer of 2021. While he arrived on an initial loan deal, the move was made permanent in the following summer. The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner has gone on to establish himself as their mainstay, and he has been their skipper since the departure of Son Heung-min.

The 27-year-old has won every major title with the Argentine national team, and he played a big part in Tottenham’s Europa League triumph. While there was a lot of talk about his future last summer as well, the North London club secured his future with a new deal.

Atletico Madrid want to sign Romero

Despite having a contract that runs until 2029, Atletico Madrid are looking to prise Cristian Romero away ahead of next season. The Colchoneros seem to have lost their competitive edge in La Liga, and Diego Simeone is keen on reinforcing his backline to help restore it.

The 27-year-olld wants someone who can lead his backline and considers Romero a perfect fit because of his aggressiveness, character, and international experience. The Argentine manager is the one pushing Atletico Madrid to go after his signature.

However, securing his services won’t be easy. Tottenham do not intend to negotiate, and they will only sit down at the table if there is an initial offer of around €50 million. The asking price seems to be too high for the Spanish outfit, and they do have cheaper alternatives on their radar. But Simeone is adamant on having Romero in his ranks.

He has spoken highly of the 27-year-old in the past, which could certainly help convince the player. But the finances involved will complicate matters, and there are other clubs that are keeping tabs on the World Cup winner.
