Newcastle United are interested in acquiring the services of Lyon sensation Tyler Morton to potentially replace Sandro Tonali.

Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali has often been linked with a move away from the club. Since he is one of their standout performers, there are always multiple top clubs that are keeping tabs on him. Of late, Arsenal have been linked with the Italian international.

While the 25-year-old will continue at the club until the summer, there is no certainty that he will be around next season, even though his contract runs until 2028. Newcastle United have been preparing for his potential exit for some time. According to a report from Caught Offside, the Magpies consider Lyon’s Tyler Morton an ideal long-term replacement for Tonali.

Morton was a part of the Liverpool youth setup. He went up the ranks at some pace, had some impressive loan spells and eventually got promoted to their first team in the summer of 2024. After making just a handful of appearances last season, the Englishman ended up parting ways with the club last summer in a deal worth £15 million in search of a more prominent role.

The 23-year-old defensive midfielder’s decision to join Lyon has certainly worked out in his favour. So far, Tyler Moron has been involved in 29 matches, and he has even contributed towards five goals. His ability to win back the ball and control the tempo of the game has stood out.

Newcastle United front-runners to sign Morton

While Tyler Morton’s contract runs until 2030, multiple top clubs are ready to prise him away. Newcastle United and Crystal Palace are two clubs that seem very keen on his signature. The Magpies are believed to be the ones leading the race for his signature.

Sandro Tonali’s future at the Tyneside club is uncertain. The Italian international could choose to leave next summer, and in that case, the Magpies want to be prepared. Since the prospect of him leaving is real, Newcastle United have prepared a list of potential replacements, and Morton is beleived to be quite high on that.

The Premier League outfit have scouted Tyler Morton on numerous occasions, and with Lyon struggling financially, they are forced to consider offers for all their players. Newcastle United sense an opportunity to snap him up for a bargain fee.

While the Magpies are leading the race at this point, Crystal Palace could certainly make things difficult for them. However, a lot might depend on what happens with Adam Wharton. His departure could force the South London outfit to go all out for Morton.
