Sekou Kone is expected to make his loan switch to Swiss side FC Lausanne-Sport in the coming period, having already played for the team during the winter break.
According to Marc Mechenoua, Swiss side FC Lausanne-Sport are set to acquire Manchester United’s young midfield star Sekou Kone on loan for the remainder of the season. The 19-year-old wonderkid has already featured for the Swiss side in an unofficial game and has been training with the new teammates since the winter break.
Manchester United have stayed sharp in the background with regard to acquiring top young talents, some from under the radar of other rivals. While many of their acquisitions for the academy levels are well-known faces from renowned academies, they have also experimented by plunging into the African talent pool since 2024.
One of the first arrivals from the African market was Sekou Kone in 2024, when they acquired the young midfielder from Guidars FC. The teenager had caught the eye with his performances in the Under-17 World Cup held around that period, and has since been rising in stature internally at Carrington.
Kone was expected to rise into a first-team star at some stage during the ongoing season, although fitness issues have curtailed his development. An orbital bone injury suffered in August has kept him sidelined for many months, and while he was recovering, Manchester United had decided to send him out on loan.
The destination may have been pre-decided as Kone has been spending time with his new club, FC Lausanne-Sport in Switzerland. The 19-year-old wonderkid has already been training with his new teammates, and reportedly featured in a friendly during the winter break.
Sekou Kone’s Manchester United future in doubt?
Kone is now waiting for administrative formalities to conclude before he can officially join Lausanne-Sport and start playing official games for the team. The idea is to allow the 19-year-old wonderkid to get regular first-team minutes while developing his game sharpness in the process.
The idea of a loan to the Swiss side may have stemmed from the fact that Manchester United feels he is closer to first-team action sooner rather than later. Playing in the Swiss league may not prove as competitive as some other divisions, although at the moment, the 19-year-old wonderkid needs regular game time, and the Red Devils view this opportunity as helpful in aiding the player, especially after a serious injury.
