David Moyes’s Everton are reportedly pushing hard to sign a new right-back in the upcoming winter transfer window.
With the January transfer window fast approaching, Everton already have plans in place to strengthen their squad. According to a report from Football Insider, the Toffees will be looking to reinforce the right-back position on a priority basis.
David Moyes wants more attacking threat from his full-backs, much like Seamus Coleman at his pomp. The manager and the recruitment team at the Hill Dickinson Stadium have been looking at the market to find someone who matches the profile they are looking for and can help them in the long run.
Jake O’Brien is currently their first-choice right-back, having taken over from club legend Seamus Coleman. The 24-year-old has done a great job for the Merseyside club. But he is not attacking in nature, and they want someone who can offer more going forward than O’Brien, who is a centre-back by trade.
Everton are on the hunt for a new right-back
In simple terms, the Toffees are looking for someone who has a similar profile to that of Coleman. Reinforcing the right-back position was on their agenda even before the season started. They did look at many players, including Kenny Tete, Wesley Franca and Kyle Walker-Peters.
Everton even made moves to secure their services, but they failed to strike a deal for any of them. The Merseyside outfit have been looking at the market ever since to identify players who could be a perfect fit for the manager’s system and their long-term project.
Bringing in a new right-back is a top priority for them heading into 2026. They will look to get it done in the winter transfer window, but if they fail, they might have to wait until the summer to sort it out.
Despite O’Brien’s consistent performances, the position remains a massive concern for Moyes as he seeks more attacking threat from wide areas. Everton have been keeping tabs on quite a few full-backs heading into January, and it will be interesting to see who they actually target as they look for the “next Seamus Coleman”.
