Newcastle United are set to cancel Antonio Cordero’s loan at KVC Westerlo and send him out again on another temporary deal in January.
According to Ekrem Konur, Newcastle United are set to cancel Antonio Cordero’s loan spell at Belgian side KVC Westerloo due to a lack of game time. The 19-year-old wonderkid is not having the best of experiences in the Jupiler Pro League, as he could be headed back to the Spanish Segunda Division with Deportivo La Coruna the leading candidate.
Spanish side Malaga were not happy to see one of their promising stars in Antonio Cordero, leave last summer after a good season in the Segunda Division. The attacker scored six goals and provided seven assists last term in 39 appearances, which led to Newcastle United signing him on a free transfer in the summer.
Newcastle United did not feel the 19-year-old wonderkid was ready for the action in the Premier League, as Cordero went out on loan for the new season. Belgian side KVC Westerlo were the team that secured his signature on a season-long loan, but things have not gone to plan in the Jupiler Pro League so far.
Cordero has played less than 100 minutes spanning across six league appearances, which has led to the player seeking more. The winger is reportedly keen to leave Westerlo, and could prefer a return to the Spanish Segunda Division, where he feels the possibility of regular game time.
Newcastle United are now set to cancel his loan deal with Westerlo and recall the winger. The plan is to send him on another loan from January until the end of the season, with some Spanish sides eager to sign him, including his former side, Malaga.
Are Deportivo La Coruna leading the Antonio Cordero race?
Deportivo La Coruna are the leading candidate to sign Cordero on loan, with the Segunda Division leaders eager to add quality to aid their promotion bid to La Liga. The Spanish side could be seen as a favourable destination by the player’s camp at the moment, given where the club are in the current standings.
He believes there are plenty of possibilities of regaining his lost form and playing regularly in the Segunda division, compared to his status at Westerlo. Newcastle United will hope the player gets the game time he seeks to aid his development, as they think the 19-year-old wonderkid is a big prospect for the future.
