AS Monaco prospect Soungoutou Magassa is reportedly West Ham United bound.
West Ham United are close to announcing their latest summer signing, with a deal agreed for AS Monaco midfielder Soungoutou Magassa. According to Fabrizio Romano via X, the Hammers have sealed terms for the 21-year-old on a package worth €17 million plus €3 million in add-ons, while AS Monaco will also retain a 10 per cent sell-on clause.
West Ham in search of inspiration
The move comes at a critical moment for West Ham. Graham Potter’s side have endured a nightmare start to the new Premier League campaign, sitting bottom of the table after losing both of their opening fixtures. Defensively fragile and struggling to create chances, the Hammers have already conceded eight goals while finding the net just once. It is the kind of start that sparks relegation fears, and reinforcements are desperately needed before the window closes.
One of the key issues has been the midfield. With Edson Alvarez departing last week, West Ham’s options have thinned considerably, leaving James Ward-Prowse and Tomas Soucek to carry much of the load. Their heavy 5-1 home defeat against Chelsea highlighted the lack of balance, with youngster Freddie Potts thrown on in the second half as a makeshift solution.
Magassa could be the answer. The French youth international broke into Monaco’s senior side in 2022 and has since built a reputation for his physical presence and composure in midfield. Last season, he featured in 21 Ligue 1 matches, playing a part in AS Monaco’s successful push to secure Champions League football.
Soungoutou Magassa to West Ham soon?
Described as a “beast” in the middle of the park, Magassa offers ball-winning ability, versatility, and the kind of athleticism that could immediately strengthen Potter’s system. At just 21, he also represents a signing for the future, with West Ham tying him down to what is expected to be a six-year deal.
Magassa looks set to become West Ham’s seventh signing of the summer, joining the likes of Kyle Walker-Peters, Callum Wilson, and Mads Hermansen in what has been an active transfer window. Despite these arrivals, the sense remains that the squad is still incomplete. Potter has not hidden his frustration at the club’s lack of depth, and more deals may yet follow in the coming days.
For now, though, Magassa’s imminent arrival offers at least one major boost. His profile fills a glaring gap in midfield, and his energy could give the Hammers a much-needed lift after a troubling start. Whether one new signing is enough to change West Ham’s fortunes remains to be seen, but the addition of Magassa feels like a step in the right direction.
