Tottenham fail with bid to sign Nico Paz

Tottenham have reportedly failed with a €40 million offer to sign Nico Paz, with Serie A side Como demanding significantly more for the playmaker.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Como have rejected a €40 million offer from Tottenham for Nico Paz. The highly-rated Serie A playmaker has been impressive in the one season with Cesc Fabregas’ side, as they will demand a significant fee for the Argentine star should Spurs decide to return with an improved bid.

Nico Paz has already proved to the world he has the talent for the highest level, and the heavy interest in the playmaker would not have surprised those in charge of Como. Following an impressive debut campaign in Serie A, manager Cesc Fabregas would not want to lose the attacking midfielder so soon from his project.

Former side Real Madrid have some tough clauses as part of their agreement to sell Paz to Como. They could either match any rival offer that Como might accept or collect the 50% sell-on clause they have inserted in the deal last summer. The Italian side, for their part, are not keen on a sale unless there’s a big offer on the table.

Tottenham are the latest to show an interest, while the likes of Manchester United kept tabs on Paz earlier. Spurs have failed with a €40 million offer for the highly-rated Serie A playmaker, with Como seemingly valuing the attacking midfielder at around €70 million. They had quoted a similar fee for Assane Diao to the likes of Everton, with the duo seen as crucial for Como’s immediate plans.

The report states it would take Tottenham or any other suitor at least €60 million to get Como to the negotiation table to figure out the next steps. However, Spurs may have to drastically improve their offer to stand a chance of signing Paz in this window, as they have stepped up their chase of an attacking midfielder following the massive injury to James Maddison.

Tottenham are eager to sign a new attacking midfielder

Maddison suffered an ACL rupture during Tottenham’s friendly with Newcastle United in Hong Kong. They had been angling for a move for Morgan Gibbs-White even before the Maddison injury, but had switched their attention towards Harvey Elliott as an alternative to the Nottingham Forest star.

Brahim Diaz is another name on their list, as Spurs boss Thomas Frank would want the club to sign an able replacement for the England international. As for their pursuit of Paz, Tottenham’s next steps in the chase would determine how serious they are about the highly-rated Serie A playmaker, with Como likely to stick to their guns and demand their price for the attacking midfielder.
