Los Angeles FC are on the verge of completing the signing of Tottenham star Son Heung-min in a record-breaking MLS deal.
According to a report from The Athletic, Son Heung-min is all set to join Los Angeles FC in the coming days. All parties have reached an agreement for the transfer to go through, and an official announcement is just around the corner. It is set to surpass the existing Major League Soccer transfer record.
Last week, Son announced that he would be leaving Tottenham Hotspur after a decade-long stint at the club. After making a name for himself at Bayer Leverkusen, he joined the North London club back in 2015 in a deal worth £22 million.
Son’s sensational Tottenham career comes to an end
Son Heung-min went from strength to strength and established himself as one of their mainstays in no time. During his time at the North London club, he was involved in a total of 454 games and finished with 173 goals and 101 assists.
While Spurs did not have the best of times in the league, he was still a standout player for them across competitions, having contributed towards 23 goals. Son led them to their first-ever major title (Europa League triumph) in 17 years, and he is leaving the club with his head held high.
He still has a year left on his deal, but Tottenham are happy to let him leave as a sign of respect for all that he has done for them. The 33-year-old wants to try a new challenge in the final phase of his career. While there has been a lot of interest in him from the Middle East, the South Korean international is interested in making the switch to America.
LAFC signing Son Heung-min in record-breaking deal
Los Angeles FC have been keen on adding Son to their squad. His arrival will not only bolster their attack but it will also boost their chances of winning the league. The MLS outfit have been working on a potential deal for weeks, and they have struck a record-breaking deal with Spurs.
Personal terms were never an issue, as Son Heung-min has been keen on making the move to America. Meanwhile, it is a major coup for LAFC, not just for the quality he brings on the pitch, but also from a marketing perspective, with Los Angeles home to the largest Korean population in the United States.
LAFC will pay around £20 million for the South Korean winger, surpassing the current MLS record transfer set when Atlanta United signed Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough. The transfer has already been finalised, and Son should be unveiled as a new LAFC player in the coming days.
