Lyon are closing in on signing Liverpool midfielder Tyler Morton in a £15 million deal, with the move expected to conclude in the coming days.
According to Liverpool Echo, Lyon are close to signing Tyler Morton as a key signing after finding a breakthrough on the fee with Liverpool. Despite the beleaguered Ligue 1 club’s financial struggles, they have now managed to conjure up £15 million to spend on the 22-year-old Liverpool whizkid.
Lyon have had a troublesome summer so far after the many events that transpired in the background. After being handed a provisional relegation to Ligue 2 back in January, the French club were eventually thrown out of the top flight before being reinstated upon appeal.
Yet, there are big question marks over their finances, which could see some of their top-rated stars leave. Thiago Almada and Rayan Cherki have already left, while Liverpool and Everton-linked Malick Fofana might be the next to depart from the Groupama Stadium.
Lyon do need to strengthen their squad in different areas, and Les Gones have now agreed a move for Tyler Morton from Liverpool. The young midfielder is set to make the move in a £15 million deal including easily achievable add-ons, while Liverpool have reportedly inserted a 20% sell-on clause if he were to move out of the French side in the future.
L’Equipe’s Hugo Guillemet did make a contrasting post on the cost of the deal, as his figures were considerably lower than the report insists. He also states the add-ons are difficult to achieve, but he did state the same sell-on fee. Either way, should the deal go through, Liverpool would have made another considerable sale this summer following a raft of exits for good price points.
Tyler Morton has a big upside for the future
Lyon were not alone as many Championship sides were keen, including Ipswich Town, following his previous spells in the second division. Liverpool had thought about selling him as he may not have a part to play in Arne Slot’s side moving forward.
West Ham were keen on the 22-year-old Liverpool whizkid, but it appears Lyon have taken control of the transfer of a top talent. Tyler Morton has a massive future ahead with a big upside likely to come in a few years, and Liverpool’s decision to include a sell-on clause will once again prove a smart move.
