Manchester United make approach for Alex Baena, Atletico Madrid hopeful of sealing deal

Manchester United have enquired about Alex Baena over a summer move, with Atletico Madrid considered the front-runner to land the Spaniard.

According to Eduardo Burgos, Manchester United are credited with an interest in Alex Baena ahead of the summer transfer window. The Red Devils have repeatedly enquired about the Villarreal attacker, although Atletico Madrid are considered front-runners for the Spaniard.

Alex Baena was a name high on the list of many Premier League sides during the winter transfer window as well as last summer. The Villarreal star is coming on the back of another exceptional season in La Liga, contributing to 14 goals in 27 La Liga games.

The Spaniard is expected to leave Villarreal in the summer, with Atletico Madrid now seen as the front-runners. Eduardo Burgos has insisted that the Colchoneros are confident of landing the attacker well before the start of the Club World Cup. Yet, he goes on to state that even though the Spanish giants have reached out to the player’s camp, formal talks with Villarreal are yet to commence.

Atletico Madrid are not the only interested party for the 23-year-old Spanish international, with Manchester United also seen as a suitor. The Red Devils have enquired about Alex Baena and his availability ahead of the summer, as Ruben Amorim could view him as a potential option for his attacking setup next season.

Aston Villa have maintained an interest in Baena for a long time, and it could be the case that Unai Emery’s side are still in the mix. However, Manchester United are making big plans to improve their attacking setup, as they might view Baena as a potential replacement for Alejandro Garnacho, with Amorim reportedly open to selling the Argentine.

Manchester United plan to revamp their attacking setup

Manchester United might be able to sign Alex Baena if the circumstances are right for the club. However, big plans are being made in the background, as Amorim will get the chance to revamp his attacking setup. There are big links with Matheus Cunha, who in theory could be the main target for specific positions that Baena takes up at Villarreal.

The Red Devils are also keen to sign a new striker, with Rasmus Hojlund the one expected to depart in the summer. Manchester United could trigger Liam Delap’s release clause and sign him from Ipswich Town as Hojlund’s potential replacement. Should they end up signing someone like Baena along with those other targets, it would be seen as a solid summer window for the club from an attacking perspective.
