Tottenham are eager to renegotiate the financial terms involved in the Mathys Tel deal, as they are only willing to sign him permanently for a reduced fee.
According to Florian Plettenberg, Tottenham are open to signing Mathys Tel permanently although they want to reduce his current asking price. The French attacker will spend the remainder of the season in north London on loan, as Spurs are eager to renegotiate the buy option price with Bayern Munich.
Tottenham fought hard in January to ensure they have Mathys Tel in their team. The French attacker initially rejected an approach from Spurs, only to give his green light to a loan move, which included a buy option between €50-55 million.
Spurs also paid a hefty loan fee to secure the French attacker, as Bayern Munich were initially adamant about a permanent transfer. The buy option reflects on how much the Bavarians want for him, with early signs indicating Tottenham were open to making the signing permanent.
However, there have been a few doubts creeping into Tottenham about Mathys Tel, as the French attacker’s output has not been outstanding. He only scored his first Premier League goal against Southampton last weekend from the penalty spot deep into injury time.
Tottenham are still undecided on Mathys Tel, as the €50-55 million fee is still seen as a large figure by those in charge of Spurs. There might be some complications in the background, as Chelsea are still considering a move for the Frenchman ahead of the summer.
Tottenham wants to renegotiate Mathys Tel fee
Tottenham are now open to signing Mathys Tel permanently on the condition that they renegotiate the fee with Bayern Munich. The French attacker does not have a future with the Bundesliga giants, which could force the issue for Spurs and help them change the asking price.
It remains to be seen whether Bayern eventually end up reducing the fee, as Spurs have previously done something similar with the signing of Dejan Kulusevski. Then again, if Spurs are not keen on triggering the buy option, it could also allow Mathys Tel to make a fresh decision about his future, as there will be other clubs showing an interest in his signature.
