Manchester United could perform U-turn over Harry Maguire future

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been linked with a move away from the club in recent months.

The 31-year-old central defender had fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford and he was expected to leave the club at the start of the season. Instead, the England international ended up staying, and he is now forcing his way back into the side.

Maguire has impressed under new manager Ruben Amorim and the Portuguese manager could throw him a lifeline at Manchester United. The player has been linked with multiple clubs recently, and it will be interesting to see if Manchester United decide to keep him at the club and offer him a new contract.

Former Manchester United, scout, Mick Brown has suggested that there could be a U-turn regarding his future.

I think he’s getting closer to knowing what his best team is,he told Football Insider.

“That was always going to be his first priority at United – and once again we come back to Harry Maguire and his role in the side.

“When he starts, they are a better team, and I think Amorim has seen that.

“A lot of clubs have been interested in him, but I think they might’ve missed out now.

“There’s been a lot of talk about his future, but every game he plays he’s proving to Amorim what he can do.

“I said before it will be the manager who makes the decision about his future, and from what I’m told, he’s been impressed with what he’s seen.

“If he keeps playing like he has done, and keeps getting picked for the big games, I think he’ll be edging closer to signing a new deal to keep him at United.”

Man United must extend Maguire contract

The 31-year-old central defender will be out of contract in the summer of 2025 at Manchester United cannot afford to lose him on a free transfer. He will be able to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs starting next month. Manchester United should look to offer him an extension and keep him at the club for a few more seasons.

The defender is clearly at the peak of his powers and he has regained his form and confidence. He could be a very useful option for them in the coming seasons.
