Tottenham expected to sign Johnny Cardoso amid rival interest

Tottenham close to securing priority option for future Johnny Cardoso deal.

Tottenham look all set to complete the signing of Real Betis midfield star Johnny Cardoso amidst interest from rival clubs.

According to a report from Football Insider, Tottenham could look to complete the signing of Johnny Cardoso in the upcoming transfer window as the amount of interest in the Real Betis star keeps growing.

Cardoso came up the ranks at Brazilian club Internacional. He made a name for himself while playing for their first team, secured a move to the Spanish club at the start of 2024 and hasn’t looked back since.

The American international has established himself as a key figure in their first team and his consistent performances haven’t gone unnoticed. While his contract with Betis runs until the summer of 2029, Cardoso could be on the move in the near future.

Tottenham could be forced into a move for Cardoso

Tottenham could be a potential destination for the 23-year-old defensive midfield as they have already done the groundwork to sign him. The North London club managed to secure a priority option to sign the American international for just £21 million while they were negotiating Giovani Lo Celso’s move to Betis.

They will have the first option to buy him and if they decide against triggering the clause, Spurs will then take a percentage on any future sale elsewhere. Daniel Levy had worked closely with Betis to ensure Tottenham get the most out of any deal and they are firmly in the driving seat.

While the North London club are yet to make a decision on whether to sign him or not, they could be forced into making a move for his services as rivals Aston Villa have entered the race. Unai Emery wants to further strengthen his midfield in the summer and he wants to bring in a new defensive midfielder.

He is quite impressed with Cardoso’s performances and would love to have him in his squad. Spurs could end up making a move for the American international as they won’t want to strengthen the team of their direct rivals who are also looking to finish inside the top four. It will be interesting to see how things develop but for now, Tottenham are still the front-runners.
