Tottenham working on signing new centre-back in January

Tottenham close to securing priority option for future Johnny Cardoso deal.

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur are keen on adding a new central defender to their squad in January.

According to Mick Brown via Football Insider, Tottenham are keen on reinforcing their backline. The North London club seek more depth quality and depth at the back, as a result, they could look to sign a new centre-back at the turn of the calendar.

Brown who has worked at Spurs, Manchester United and Aston Villa back in the day recently talked about the North London club’s lack of defensive depth. He remains well-connected at the club and has a fair idea of what they are looking to do going ahead.

The former scout feels Tottenham lack depth at the back and they are looking to address that issue in the upcoming transfer window. They wanted to bring in a new central defender during the summer. But, that didn’t go according to plan.

Tottenham’s search for a new central defender

However, it hasn’t stopped Spurs from dreaming about a new central defender who can provide the much-needed depth and quality to their team, helping them compete with the likes of Manchester City and Arsenal with a much stronger defensive rotation.

While they do have two world-class central defenders Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven as their first-choice pairing, they lack depth. Radu Dragusin does seem to be an ideal cover but the Romanian international hasn’t lived up to the expectations so far.

With him not performing at the desired level, Tottenham have made it their priority to sign a new centre-back in January. Having kept just two clean sheets in their first nine league games, they want to strengthen their defensive rotation.

Brown feels the lack of depth has played a big part in it and bringing in a world-class defender will give them the kind of depth that is needed to challenge the best teams in the country.

Postecoglou was forced to turn towards makeshift options last season and in order to avoid such a situation, the North London club are working hard to sign a new central defender in January.
