Manchester United have suffered a blow in their pursuit of Alvaro Fernandez Carreras as he would prefer to join Real Madrid.
According to Record via SportWitness, Alvaro Fernandez Carreras’ future has become a big talking point following his impressive performances for Benfica. The Spanish full-back has been linked with a move back to Manchester United but the report suggests the Red Devils have suffered a massive setback as he would prefer joining Real Madrid.
Carreras was a part of the Madrid youth ranks before he made the move to Manchester in the summer of 2020. While he did get promoted to United’s first team in 2022, he never got any opportunity to play for their first team.
The 21-year-old spent most of his time out on loan. He ended up joining Benfica on a short loan for the second half of last season. He managed to impress people at the Portuguese club and the move was made permanent last summer.
So far he has featured in 25 matches for Benfica and has even contributed towards two goals. Nine of his appearances have come in the ongoing season and reports have linked him with a move back to Manchester United.
Carreras could return to Old Trafford
While the Red Devils already have two left-backs in Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, both have struggled to stay fit for long periods of time and Diogo Dalot has been forced to start on the right side of the defence. They do need another left-sided full-back to strengthen the rotation and Carreras could be a good fit.
Erik ten Hag’s team have a massive advantage in the race to his signature as there is a buyback clause in his deal which is worth just €20 million. Meanwhile, other interested clubs will have to fork out €50 million if they want to sign the 21-year-old whose contract with Benfica runs until 2029.
Carreras keen on re-joining Real Madrid
While United do need a left-back and they have a massive advantage in the race, they have suffered a blow as the player would prefer to join Real Madrid instead. He would liked to return to his homeland and join the European giants.
Los Blancos are considering reinforcing the left-back position. While they have been linked with the Spanish youth international, they are unlikely to pay €50 million. More importantly, their priority for that position will be Alphonso Davies who could be available for free in 10 months.
