Fabrizio Romano comments on Liverpool links with Merlin Rohl

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has his say on Liverpool’s reported interest in SC Freiburg sensation Merlin Rohl.

Liverpool are always on the lookout for players who can further bolster their squad, players who can help them in the long run. Merlin Rohl is one such player who has been linked with a move to the Merseyside club. But according to an update by Fabrizio Romano via Caught Offside, the Reds are not working on a potential deal to sign the young sensation.

He said, “I’ve seen the stories about Liverpool’s interest in Freiburg’s Merlin Rohl, but at the moment I don’t have confirmation on Liverpool working on this deal. Liverpool’s focus is currently on different areas, but also for Rohl at the moment there are no concrete contacts ongoing. Richard Hughes has fantastic knowledge of talents so I’m sure he’s monitoring many players but that’s it now.”

Rohl came up the ranks at FC Ingolstadt and made a name for himself while playing for their first team before making the move to SC Freiburg in the summer of 2022. The German youth international has had significant improvements in his game in recent years.

The 2023/24 season was a breakthrough campaign for the 22-year-old at SC Freiburg. While the youngster only had limited game time, he was involved in a total of 34 matches and even contributed towards seven goals for the Bundesliga club. Rohl played in a variety of positions and showcased the potential as well as the abilities that he possesses.

Liverpool interested in Rohl?

The 22-year-old did start the new season in a bright fashion but an injury has derailed his progress. His performances over the last 18 months have resulted in a significant amount of interest in his services. Liverpool are one of the clubs that have been linked with the German youth international of late.

As per the reports, his huge potential and his ability to feature in multiple positions is what attracts interest from the Reds. Despite those reports, Romano has suggested that there is nothing concrete going on in the background.

Liverpool are not working on a deal to sign Merlin Rohl, and they have other priorities that need to be taken care of. One of which will most likely be signing a new defensive midfielder.  They are not in contact with anyone to sign the 22-year-old.

While the Reds’ sporting director Richard Hughes is always on the lookout for young stars and he could have his eye on the Freiburg star, there is nothing going on between the two parties with regard to a potential move.
