Liverpool remain admirers of Anthony Gordon but move difficult

Liverpool could find it increasingly difficult to sign Anthony Gordon in the near future as he closes in on a new deal with Newcastle United.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are firm admirers of Anthony Gordon after glancing in his direction during the summer window. However, the Merseysiders may find it increasingly difficult to sign the 23-year-old attacker, as he’s close to penning an essential contract with Newcastle United.

When the summer window opened, the big talk surrounding Newcastle United was their need to probably sell one or two of their big stars to comply with PSR obligations. The Magpies were in a precarious position with the financial regulations but expertly manoeuvred through the storm.

While they had an otherwise lacklustre summer window for incoming players, the Magpies did a wonderful job retaining all of their important players. Those linked away with an exit included Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes, and Anthony Gordon.

Liverpool were big admirers of the 23-year-old attacker, and the Merseysiders even came close to making an offer. Newcastle United were relaxed during the summer and are now planning on making Gordon one of their highest earners at the club

They are keen to tie him down to a new long-term contract, with Gordon reportedly close to penning fresh terms at St James Park. Should that pan out to plan, the Magpies will view the 23-year-old attacker as untouchable in the market and with that, they will be able to ward off suitors for the England international.

Liverpool unlikely to sign Gordon

Liverpool retains an interest in Gordon heading into the next window, although as he inches closer to that new contract, the numbers surrounding the 23-year-old attacker will be astronomical. Newcastle United will not consider any approaches for the winger, and even if Gordon reacts to some of those links, they will be in a terrific position to demand a significant fee.

Hence, while Liverpool are firm admirers of Gordon, they are unlikely to sign him in January or next summer. Luis Diaz’s form since the season began has made their fans forget about those links to Gordon in the summer, as they will hope the Colombian’s form ensures they do not link to the Newcastle United star once again in the future.
