Newcastle United are set to abandon their pursuit of Crystal Palace defensive mainstay Marc Guehi after having multiple bids rejected.
Newcastle United have been keen on signing a world-class centre-back before the end of the transfer window and Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi has been their priority target from the start. But, according to a report from Sky Sports, the Magpies are willing to walk away from their pursuit of the England international after failing to strike a deal with the Eagles.
Things might not have worked out for Guehi at Chelsea. But the move to Crystal Palace in the summer of 2021 has helped him establish himself as one of the best young defenders in the Premier League. His consistent performances for the Eagles along with his heroics for England at Euro 2024 have resulted in a significant amount of interest.
Newcastle United’s search for a new centre-back
With his contract running out in 2026, top clubs from across Europe have been trying to prise him away. But they have hardly had any success. Newcastle United have been working on a potential deal for a long time. While they have already added Lloyd Kelly to their squad, the Magpies only have two out-and-out centre-backs available, with Sven Botman and skipper Jamaal Lascelles out injured.
They are in desperate need of signing another centre-back, and Eddie Howe’s heart is set on bringing Guehi to St. James’ Park. But, his team have had no luck in negotiations. They have already seen multiple bids being turned down by Crystal Palace.
Newcastle United to end Marc Guehi’s chase
In recent weeks, the Magpies had submitted an offer worth £60 million plus £5 million as add-ons. But, it was turned down by the Eagles without much thought. They have already tabled an improved offer which is a club-record £65 million plus £5 million in add-ons for the England international. But, Palace’s owner Steve Parish has so far refused to accept it.
While the new £70 million package remains on the table, the feeling around Newcastle United is that the Eagles do not want to sell Guehi despite him having only two years left on his deal. As a result, Howe’s team have decided to drop their interest in the 24-year-old, and it will be interesting to see if they look elsewhere in the final hours of the transfer window.
