Aston Villa have received a major boost in their pursuit of Joe Gomez as he has informed Liverpool about his desire to leave this summer.
According to a report from Football Insider, Joe Gomez wants to leave Liverpool before the end of the transfer window. The Aston Villa target has informed people at the Merseyside club that he wants to leave if their £40-45 million asking price is met.
Gomez made a name for himself at Charlton Athletic before making the move to Anfield in the summer of 2015. He has since gone from strength to strength and has been an integral part of their defensive setup in recent seasons. In the 2023/24 season, he was involved in a total of 51 matches and he started in 31 of those fixtures.
While the Englishman was quite an important part of Jurgen Klopp’s setup, things look a touch different under Arne Slot, with the player keen on a move away. He seems to seek a new challenge elsewhere, and there is interest in his services from Aston Villa.
Joe Gomez to leave Liverpool?
The 27-year-old still has three years left on his deal, but he wants a way out of Liverpool. Gomez did not travel with the squad for their opening Premier League fixture of the 2024/25 season which does suggest that he might not be a part of the team when the transfer deadline ends in less than two weeks.
As per the report, the English international has informed the club that he wants to leave if the club ends up meeting their asking price. With significant time left on his deal, the Reds value him at £40-45 million and a fee close to that should be enough to prise him away.
While Newcastle United have also been linked with the Liverpool defensive star, the focus is on Unai Emery’s Aston Villa who have been quite busy throughout the transfer window. They have already added a lot of quality to the mix and are now looking to strengthen their backline further.
Reports suggest they are willing to sanction the departure of Diego Carlos to raise funds to sign the former Charlton Athletic defender. They brought in the Brazilian centre-back with a lot of expectations, but injuries have not allowed him to showcase his true abilities. So, Aston Villa are not ready to part ways with him, with Gomez a likely replacement.
