Liverpool’s defensive star Joe Gomez is open to a move away from Anfield as he seeks regular first-team action.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Liverpool could be forced to look into the market for a new centre-back as Joe Gomez’s future at the Merseyside club seems quite uncertain. He could be on the move if there is a decent offer on the table as the English international is keen on being a regular starter.

Gomez joined Liverpool back in the summer of 2015 just a year after he managed to break into Charlton’s first team. He was an integral part of their team and surely played a big part in the all success they had under Jurgen Klopp.

He surely had an impressive 2023/24 season as he was involved in 51 matches and racked up over 3,100 minutes. But, there are doubts about his fitness given his injury history and he surely doesn’t seem to be a guaranteed start under new boss Arne Slot.

While Joel Matip’s departure does make things easier, Slot does have a few quality options in Jarell Quansah and Sepp van den Berg. The English international’s ability to feature anywhere at the back as well as a defensive midfielder could be a huge advantage for their new boss. But, reports suggest Gomez could look for a move as seeks to be a regular starter.

Joe Gomez’s failed Newcastle move

He still has three years left on his contract but if an ideal opportunity comes along, the 27-year-old could switch clubs. During the initial phase of the transfer window, Gomez was linked with a move to Newcastle United. The Magpies were looking to balance their books before the financial deadlines and they seemed ready to part ways with Anthony Gordon.

They were in talks with Liverpool and during those negotiations, the Magpies tried to sign Gomez as a part of the deal where Gordon would go the other way. While things were advancing at some pace, the Tyneside club figured out a way to settle their financial issues without selling Gordon and the deal fell off.

Joe Gomez could leave Liverpool

While it is not yet certain if the Magpies could return for his services, there is surely significant amount of interest in him from clubs in the Middle East. More importantly, clubs who are competing in the Champions League could look to sign someone with so much experience.

Gomez’s move to Newcastle might have fallen off but he is open-minded about a new challenge away from Anfield. Liverpool seem aware of the player’s desire and they are prepared for any late surprises in case a decent offer is put on their table. They seem to have started working on a potential replacement. The English international’s future is one to keep an eye on until the end of the window.
