Manchester United attempted to hijack Aston Villa’s Amadou Onana move

Manchester United made an attempt to hijack Everton star midfielder Amadou Onana’s move to Aston Villa.

According to Pieter-Jan Calcoen, Manchester United attempted to hijack Aston Villa’s move for Amadou Onana. The Everton midfielder is on the verge of completing a move to Unai Emery’s team. While an agreement is already in place for his transfer, the Reds Devils made a late for Onana’s services as they look to strengthen their midfield.

The Belgian midfielder has gone from strength to strength since making the move to England from LOSC Lille. The 22-year-old defensive midfielder has done wonders for the Toffees in the centre of the park. He has been their most consistent performer over the last two seasons and his work didn’t go unnoticed.

While he still has three years left on his contract with the Merseyside club, his departure became almost certain when the 2023/24 season ended. With multiple top clubs pushing for his signature, Everton were expected to cash in on him given their current financial situation.

Villa agree deal to sign Onana

They have agreed on a deal worth close to £50 million for his transfer to Aston Villa. Emery’s team parted ways with Douglas Luiz who has joined Juventus and they have successfully replaced him by signing one of the most promising young defensive midfielder in the Premier League.

Villa were involved in intense negotiations with the Toffees and they finally managed to reach an agreement with the club. The player had already agreed to a move but nothing has been signed yet as Onana hasn’t returned to the UK, he is currently on holiday following Belgian’s elimination from the Euros.

United attempted to hijack Onana’s move to Villa

With the transfer not yet final, United made a late attempt to hijack the deal. The Red Devils want to bring in a new defensive midfielder who can help replace Casemiro. They want a young star who can form a long-term partnership with Kobbie Mainoo.

Onana seemed to be a perfect option and they attempted to lure him to Old Trafford. But, it hasn’t worked out as they have failed with an attempted hijack.

The Belgian international has already made his choice and will undergo a medical at his new club on Sunday and will be penning down a long-term contract with them on Monday. He is all set to be a vital part of their project as they prepare to compete in the Champions League next season.
