Newly-promoted Premier League club Leicester City are leading the race to sign Celtic star Matt O’Riley amidst interest from Everton.
According to a report from TEAMtalk, Leicester City are front-runners for the services of Matt O’Riley who has been doing wonders for Celtic in the Scottish top flight. The Foxes are preparing for life without Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and they feel the Danish international could be an ideal replacement.
O’Riley was a part of the Fulham youth ranks back in the day before he made the move to MK Dons. Just 12 months after joining them, he made the switch to Celtic in the winter of 2022 for just £1.5 million. He has established himself as one of their top stars with his consistent performances.
Last season, the 23-year-old Danish international was involved in 49 matches and he ended up contributing towards 37 goals (19 goals, 18 assists). He played a big part in their league and cup double. Despite all his efforts, he narrowly missed out on Denmark’s squad for UEFA Euro 2024 and is now looking to join a bigger club this summer.
While there is a significant amount of interest from all across Europe, O’Riley is keen on playing in the Premier League. Everton are one of the clubs linked with the youngster. The Toffees have not had the best of times in recent seasons and are looking to make significant changes that can help them bounce back.
Leicester City lead the race for O’Riley
Given the kind of performances the former Fulham midfielder has put in recent seasons, Everton feel he could do wonders for them. While they are keen on his signature, the Merseyside club are behind Leicester City in the race.
The Foxes have secured an immediate return to the English top flight and are now looking to make the necessary changes to ensure they maintain their status as Premier League club.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was key to their promotion to the top flight. And with the Englishman joining Chelsea in a deal worth £30 million, Leicester City are keen on signing a quality midfielder who can help replace him. So, they believe O’Riley could be an ideal fit for their system.
The Foxes are believed to be in a very strong position to sign him as they are pushing hard to strike a deal with the Scottish club. His potential move to Leicester City could see the record for the Scottish Premiership’s most expensive departure fall. The current record stands at £25 million (Kieran Tierney and Jota), and Celtic want more than that for their midfield star.
