Olympique Marseille have submitted a formal bid to acquire the services of Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Olympique Marseille are keen on reinforcing their attack ahead of next season. Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood is their main target for the summer and they are closing in on his signature.
Greenwood has had an impressive return to football with a loan spell at Getafe. United did consider the idea of reinstating him in their team but they ended up deciding it was better to let him revive himself away from Old Trafford. As a result, he joined the Spanish club on loan for the 2023/24 campaign.
The 22-year-old right-winger had an impressive spell with the La Liga side as he was involved in 36 matches and ended up contributing towards 16 goals (10 goals, 6 assists). His impressive comeback hasn’t gone unnoticed and multiple top clubs seem interested in his signature.
Olympique Marseille pushing for Greenwood
While he is back at his parent club, Greenwood doesn’t have a future at the club. With his contract running out in the summer of 2025, the Red Devils have now decided to sanction his departure. Clubs from all across Europe have been linked with the United academy graduate but Olympique Marseille are the ones who seem quite serious about their pursuit.
Marseille have already appointed Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager and now they are looking to bolster their attack by adding Greenwood to it. He could be a marquee signing for the club and his ability to feature anywhere in attack could provide great tactical options to the former Brighton boss.
The French club have already been in talks with United regarding a potential deal as the young forward remains their priority target for this transfer window. They have sent a formal bid to the Red Devils for Greenwood’s signature and according to Romano, Marseille are getting closer to an agreement.
While multiple reports suggest that United are looking for a significant fee, they are open to a loan deal with an obligation to buy. But, they seem keen on including a sell-on clause in order to ensure they make more money on the 22-year-old sensation in the years to come.
