Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are reportedly closing in on the signature of Italian defensive sensation Riccardo Calafiori.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are keen on acquiring the services of Riccardo Calafiori as they look to add more quality to their backline. They have already been working towards a potential deal to bring the Italian international to North London and are now pushing to complete the signing by next week as the final round of talks has already been scheduled.
Calafiori has been in exceptional form over the last 24 months. Things might not have worked out for him at AS Roma, but he has managed to revive himself in some fashion. A move to FC Basel allowed him to play regular first-team football, and it led to a £4.2 million transfer to Bologna last summer.
Calafiori’s rise has resulted in a lot of interest
He had a sensational return to Italy as he featured in 33 matches and helped them secure Champions League football. The 22-year-old has further enhanced his reputation thanks to his exceptional performances for Italy at UEFA Euro 2024.
Multiple top clubs from across Europe have been chasing the Italian international’s signature, who still has three years left on his contract at Bologna. Initial reports suggested that the player was keen on making a move to Juventus. But it seems he is now all set to join the Premier League ahead of next season.
Arsenal could sign Riccardo Calafiori by next week
Chelsea were keen on signing Calafiori in an attempt to further strengthen their backline. But Arsenal have been in pole position to acquire his services for a while now. The Gunners were in advanced talks with Bologna for his signature and according to Romano, they are pushing to get the deal over the line by next week.
The final round of talks between the two clubs have already been scheduled and if things go according to plan, Calafiori could be seen playing for Arsenal next season. Mikel Arteta is keen on his signature as his arrival will increase the competition for places at the back, and his versatility could be of great use.
The Gunners are confident about striking a deal as Calafiori want to join the North London club. He is keen on being a part of the project and has agreed on a contract until 2029. It will be interesting to see what the final fee will be as Bologna have been holding out on their valuation of £42 million for some time now.
