Genoa could cool their interest in Djed Spence as Tottenham refuses to lower their demands to sell the 23-year-old.
According to Calcio Genoa, a deal for Djed Spence could be on the verge of a collapse as Genoa are thinking about cooling their interest. The 23-year-old is unwanted at Tottenham, and they are not ready to reduce their demands to sell the defender after an impressive loan spell with the Serie A side.
Genoa to cool Djed Spence’s interest
Djed Spence found himself in unfamiliar territory with the arrival of Ange Postecoglou. The Australian, just like his predecessor Antonio Conte, did not rate the right-back and wanted him gone. A failed loan spell at Leeds United compelled Spurs to recall him and send him on another loan spell, this time to Genoa.
He went to the Italian side as part of Tottenham’s deal to sign Radu Dragusin. The 23-year-old has performed admirably and made good use of his chance. Genoa had opened talks with Spurs to discuss a permanent transfer for the defender, and things were looking positive so far.
Genoa reportedly had a buy-option in the loan deal, although details of the amount remain unclear. Reports stated they had made an offer, however, the move could now be in jeopardy as the Italians are ready to walk away from discussions, and Tottenham is not willing to budge on their asking price, which could be in the region of €10 million.
Genoa feels the asking price is still steep for a player that Spurs do not need. Tottenham had invested nearly €15 million in the right-back position, but his value has since regressed dramatically because of a lack of quality and opportunities in the first team. Hence, even with their apparent interest, the Italian side is willing to walk away and move on to targets cheaper than Spence.
Tottenham do not need Djed Spence
When Spence signed for Tottenham from Middlesbrough, manager Conte made it clear that the 23-year-old was not his signing but a club decision. Soon enough, the Italian did not select Spence from his squad and thus began the regression.
He has since spent time on loan to Rennes and Leeds, as neither spell worked out for him. The only thing that worked for Spence since that season with Nottingham Forest was the time at Genoa, and even that move is now in jeopardy.
