Real Betis are reportedly pushing hard to re-sign Argentine international Giovani Lo Celso from Tottenham in the summer.
According to Marca via Sport Witness, Giovani Lo Celso could part ways with Tottenham Hotspur ahead of next season. The attacking midfielder is no longer an important part of their first team, and they could sanction his departure with Real Betis looking to bring him back to Spain.
Lo Celso’s failed Tottenham move
Giovani Lo Celso arrived at the North London club back in the summer of 2019 from Real Betis. While it was an initial loan deal, the move was made permanent next summer. Spurs invested a significant fee on acquiring him but the move has not worked out as planned.
The 28-year-old has not lived up to the expectations, and he has gone further down the pecking order at the club post the arrival of Ange Postecoglou. The Argentine might have featured in 24 matches during the 2023/24 season, but he has been on the pitch for less than 600 minutes.
With his contract running out in 2025, his future at the club has been uncertain. Spurs could look to sanction his departure in the summer to raise some funds rather than losing him for free in 12 months.
Real Betis’s dream to bring Lo Celso back to the club
Real Betis are interested in bringing the 28-year-old back to the club because of his versatility and his current situation at Tottenham. With Nabil Fekir’s future at the club uncertain, Giovani Lo Celso could come in as an ideal replacement.
People at the club feel it is time for Fekir to move on and with his departure on the cards, this could be an opportunity for Betis to reinforce their midfield. And, as per the report, they have already taken the first steps towards signing the Argentine. The La Liga outfit have made contact with the playmaker as they look to add him to their squad.
Real Betis had sent representatives to London last month to enquire about the total cost of re-signing the South American and have already met with his agents in Madrid. As things stand, there are high chance of Lo Celso returning to the Benito Villamarin Stadium.
