Newcastle United are keen on signing the Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio.

According to Desportoauminuto, the Premier League side were keen on signing him during the summer transfer window, but the move did not materialise. Apparently, they have promised to return for him when the transfer window reopened in January.

The 22-year-old central defender has established himself as a key player for the Portuguese club and he should prove to be a quality acquisition for Newcastle as well. The Magpies need to bring in defensive reinforcements and Inacio would be a quality, long-term addition for them.

The defender has a €60 million release clause in his contract and it will be interesting to see if Newcastle are prepared to pay that kind of money for him. The 22-year-old has the potential to develop into a top-class player for the Premier League side and he could end up justifying the investment in the long run.

Newcastle must look to bring in a quality partner for Sven Botman and the 22-year-old certainly fits the profile. He could prove to be an upgrade on Fabian Schar and Dan Burn. Newcastle managed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League this season and they will be hoping to compete at the highest level in the years to come. They must bring in top-class players in order to compete with the Premier League elite and signings like Inacio would be a step in the right direction.

The 22-year-old is a prodigious talent with a bright future ahead of him and he will want to play for the biggest clubs. The opportunity to showcase his qualities in the Premier League will be an attractive proposition for him and he could use Newcastle as a stepping stone.

If he manages to impress in the Premier League with the Magpies, he will have plenty of opportunities to join bigger clubs in the near future. Signing him in January would help Newcastle tighten up defensively and finish the season strongly. They have had a mediocre start to the season and they will be desperate to finish in the top four.
