Tottenham Hotspur keen on Christian Norgaard

Tottenham close to securing priority option for future Johnny Cardoso deal.

Tottenham are showing an interest in Brentford midfielder Christian Norgaard ahead of the January window as Ange Postecoglou seeks changes.

According to Football Transfers, Tottenham are looking at different midfield options ahead of the January window. They have now added Christian Norgaard to their list of potential targets, as Ange Postecoglou anticipates an acute shortage of midfielders in the new year.

Tottenham may have had the best start to their Premier League campaign ever, but there are lots of concerns for Ange Postecoglou with squad depth. Many have discounted Spurs from a potential title challenge for those reasons, as they may not have the required quality behind them to cover for injured stars.

On Monday night, Tottenham had a nightmare of a game at home against Chelsea, which threatened to derail their early momentum and even their title hopes. Two red cards and four goals conceded ended their unbeaten run in the Premier League, but the game got overshadowed by the red card to Cristian Romero and the hamstring injury for Micky van de Ven.

Postecoglou will look for a new defender as cover for his current stars, but there’s also a potential problem brewing in midfield. With Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr settled as the manager’s first-choice pair in the middle, the duo will depart in January for the AFCON.

Apart from that, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg also considers his future after falling in the pecking order. Giovanni Lo Celso might also depart, while there are still immediate doubts about integrating Rodrigo Bentancur after his return to action following a severe knee injury.

In the latter’s case, Postecoglou would like to manage his fitness carefully rather than putting pressure when his current stars are absent in the new year. Hence, the Spurs boss wants reinforcements in the midfield area, with Brentfford’s Christian Norgaard emerging as a target.

Tottenham are also in the chase for Andre, but Liverpool may have the upper hand ahead of Spurs or even Arsenal. Hence, Postecoglou might resist the temptation of spending big on someone with less experience and instead use the funds to bring in an experienced head in the Premier League.

Norgaard, for his part, has been exceptional for Brentford, with the 29-year-old Premier League midfielder revered for his reading of the game and screening the defence. It’s what Postecoglou might need to offset the loss of some of his key players in January.

Furthermore, Norgaard can also become a quality rotational option for the Australian manager when his current first-choice pair returns. The 29-year-old Premier League midfielder might seriously consider a significant move away from Brentford, but will he sacrifice regular football to become a bench option at Spurs is the question.
