Fenerbahce wanted to sign Scott McTominay in last-gasp move

Fenerbahce wanted to sign 26-year-old Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay on the Turkish transfer deadline day.

According to a report by Takvim, Fenerbahce wanted to acquire the services of Scott McTominay on deadline day. The Turkish club were keen on bolstering their midfield before the end of their transfer window and pushed for the services of the Scottish international.

Throughout the summer, Fenerbahce have been quite busy in the transfer window. Quite a few of their star players have left the club. But they have managed to reinforce their squad by signing some exceptional players.

The Turkish club added the likes of Cengiz Under, Sebastian Szymanski and Fred among others. Despite signing quite a few world-class players, they wanted to add another midfielder before the transfer deadline.

Fenerbahce’s manager Ismail Kartal was keen on having a new number six at his disposal before the end of the transfer window. Kartal made it quite clear that he needed a defensive-minded midfielder in his ranks, and the Turkish club went after another Manchester United player after having already signed Fred from the English club.

Now, they wanted to add Scott McTominay to their squad. The 26-year-old has come up the ranks at the club and was promoted to their first team back in the summer of 2017. Since being promoted to the senior side, he has featured in a total of 211 matches and has contributed towards 24 goals.

The Scottish international has been an important player for the Red Devils since making his debut. But, over the past few seasons, things have changed a lot. Manchester United have added quite a few players to their midfield and the 26-year-old has fallen down the pecking order.

McTominay is not an integral part of Erik ten Hag’s setup, and the Dutch manager was ready to negotiate his departure. While the Red Devils wanted to offload him while their window was still open, they failed to do so.

While the transfer window in Europe’s top leagues was over, there were still a few countries where the window was active, and they wanted to sign the Scottish international. Turkish club Fenerbahce wanted to add him to their ranks before the end of their transfer window (15 September).

They were looking to sign him on a season-long loan from Manchester United. However, they could not strike a deal for his services in time and the 26-year-old is still a part of the Red Devils’ first-team setup.

While McTominay has featured in two matches this season, he has been on the pitch for just seven minutes. And, things are unlikely to improve under Ten Hag, as a result, he will most likely push for a move away from the club in the winter amid interest from Fulham and other clubs.
