Manchester United have suffered a major blow in their pursuit of 27-year-old Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.
According to a report by 90min, Manchester United are keen on having Sofyan Amrabat in their ranks. The 27-year-old midfielder has been in sensational form over the past 18 months and he is expected to be on the move in the ongoing transfer window.
The Red Devils are keen on adding another midfielder to the mix before the end of the transfer window. Erik ten Hag is desperately looking for another defensive midfielder as he looks to build a deadly double pivot in the centre of the park.
While there are a few names on Ten Hag’s list, his priority is to sign Amrabat from Fiorentina. The 27-year-old midfielder was on fire last year at the FIFA World Cup 2022. He was amongst the best players in the tournament and ended up helping Morocco become the first African nation to reach the semi-finals of the global event.
Amrabat was a consistent performer for Fiorentina at the club level. He helped them reach two finals in the 2022-23 season. While he is a key player for the Italian club, they could end up offloading him before the end of the transfer window.
The Moroccan international’s contract runs out in the summer of 2024. Fiorentina want to extend his stay at the club but the player is not keen on staying and he is looking for a move to a bigger club.
Manchester United have been interested in the 27-year-old throughout the transfer window but they haven’t succeeded in signing him. The Red Devils have an agreement in principle with the player on personal terms. But, they haven’t placed an official bid for his services.
They have already spent a fortune on singing Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund. As a result, they can’t sign Amrabat permanently without breaking FFP rules. While they have raised funds by selling Fred and Dean Henderson, it is not enough. They still need to offload a few more players.
With a permanent move looking very unlikely, the Red Devils approached Fiorentina regarding a loan deal with a buy option. But, the Italian club have rejected the offer as they intend on cashing in on the 27-year-old.
