Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a surprise swap deal to sign Wolves defender Nelson Semedo, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka heading in the opposite direction.
According to Football Insider, Manchester United would reportedly be willing to use Aaron Wan-Bissaka as a makeweight in a proposal to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Nelson Semedo.
It is evident based on their performances in the first two games of the new Premier League season that Erik ten Hag needs to change quite a few things and bring in even more reinforcements to plug squad holes.
Casemiro was left too isolated in the middle, while summer recruit Mason Mount and captain Bruno Fernandes were caught off-guard high up the pitch. The attack needs to be tweaked as Marcus Rashford simply does not influence the games as the focal point up top, while Luke Shaw’s muscular problem has come at the wrong time for the club, with Tyrell Malacia also sidelined.
Few would have considered the right-back position as a source of major concern. Yet, it appears ten Hag desperately wants an upgrade on Wan-Bissaka. The notion comes after a report from Football Insider a couple of days ago suggested that Manchester United were hoping to wrap up a deal for Nelson Semedo and have already made contact with Wolves over a potential deal in the final days of the summer window.
The 29-year-old arrived at the Molineux in 2020 from Barcelona. And after a slow start to life in the Premier League, he has since become a regular for the Black Country outfit. Overall, Semedo has racked up 106 appearances, scored twice, and registered four assists across all competitions.
Last season, he was ever-present for Wolves, as they managed to escape relegation despite looking doomed to go down at one stage. This season, he has already featured in every game for Wolves so far.
Wolves need to sell yet another star player before the end of August to meet the UEFA Financial Fair Play Regulations. Ruben Neves, Nathan Collins, and Raul Jimenez have all left the club this summer, while Manchester City have set sights on signing Matheus Nunes in the coming days.
Semedo could be the next one out the door, with a move to Old Trafford now a possibility. Ten Hag is even willing to allow Wan-Bissaka to move to Wolves if it means landing Semedo. From Manchester United’s perspective, this proposed swap deal does not make much sense. And signing Semedo would hardly be considered a long-term acquisition given that he will soon turn 30.
The ex-Barcelona full-back also has defensive frailties and recklessness in his game. So he will not be a significant upgrade on Wan-Bissaka, with the 25-year-old much more solid at the back. And he has also shown a lot of improvements in his attacking game. It will be interesting to see how this story evolves in the coming days as we edge closer to the deadline.
