Newcastle United are reportedly eyeing a summer deal for Juventus veteran Leonardo Bonucci.

According to Calciomercato, a resurgent Newcastle United are interested in securing the services of Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci in the ongoing summer transfer window.

At 36, the Italian legend is nearing the end of his career but is not ready to throw in the towel just yet. He is keen to continue in Europe rather than choose a lavish retirement in Saudi Arabia or move to the MLS in the United States.

However, Cristiano Giuntoli is keen to rebuild the Juventus roster and is ready to part ways with Bonucci this summer. The veteran’s contract expires in 2024, meaning selling him this summer will see Juventus rake in a transfer fee that can be reinvested back into the squad.

More so, they will also save €13 million in wages (gross), opening up space that can be used to lure in younger and fresher talent. Bonucci could continue to sport the black and stripes come the new season. But he could end up swapping life in Turin for that on Tyneside.

Newcastle United are readying themselves for a well-earned UEFA Champions League campaign and will need to reinforce their squad. They are currently in talks with Juventus regarding a deal for Bonucci. The Magpies are yet to make an offer and appear to be doing their homework before coming to a decision.

Landing the 36-year-old would give Eddie Howe a well accomplished player whose experience is worth its weight in gold. The Azzurri star is past the age when he can be considered a regular starter and will largely contribute in a timely manner. It would not be amiss to suggest he can don the same role as Thiago Silva at Chelsea.

Newcastle United could also make a statement by landing Bonucci. While the centre-back’s prime is well behind him, he remains one of the most noticeable defenders from Serie A in the last decade. With several younger players, many of them set to make their Champions League debut, Bonucci’s experience and leadership could help galvanise the squad.

It will not be the first time this summer that the Magpies have raided the Italian top division. They have already landed Sandro Tonali from AC Milan, a promising signing for a side on the rise. Bonucci, on the other hand, will bring leadership and experience, adding more to the mental side of things. Surely, the Italian international is worth a punt despite being at best a short-term solution.
