Fabio Carvalho set for RB Leipzig move next week

Liverpool star Fabio Carvalho is reportedly close to joining RB Leipzig on a season-long loan deal.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho will join RB Leipzig until the end of the next season. The agreement between the two clubs is expected to be finalised next week, with medical also pencilled in as part of the process.

The well-known Italian journalist has also confirmed that the deal will not include an option to buy, and Liverpool previously rejected an offer from Leipzig to buy the player outright.

The 2022/23 season did not go according to plan for Carvalho. The young Portuguese midfielder arrived having been one of Fulham’s standout players the season before, with 18 goal involvements in 36 Championship appearances. But in the end, he only played just over 700 minutes in all competitions for the Reds in the recently concluded season, with most of that coming before the World Cup.

The 20-year-old played just 120 minutes across all competitions since the action resumed in December after the World Cup. No wonder, as the season ended, there were rumblings that he wanted a move elsewhere to earn regular game time.

Several Premier League clubs have shown interest in landing Carvalho. But RB Leipzig emerged as the front-runner in securing his services on loan. The Bundesliga outfit were willing to cough up the cash to sign Carvalho on a permanent deal. But Jurgen Klopp was not interested in parting company with the talented Portuguese midfielder just yet.

Leipzig even made a permanent offer of around £10 million for the player, which Liverpool rejected out of hand. The young attacking midfielder is rated very highly at Anfield and is expected to break out in the near future. But such was the German side’s determination that they have now agreed a season-long loan for him.

Die Roten Bullen have a reputation for nurturing young players, and the move is ideal for the Portugal Under-21 star, who is likely to get plenty of chances to impress in Germany.

After the departure of last season’s club top scorer Christopher Nkunku to Chelsea, Marco Rose’s side seems to be preparing themselves for life without highly influential attacking midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, who has been strongly linked with a move away from Red Bull Arena amid interest from Newcastle United, Chelsea, and Liverpool themselves.
