Arsenal will look to cash in on their 28-year-old backup goalkeeper Runar Alex Runarsson ahead of next season.
According to a report by Football Insider, Arsenal are all set to offload Runar Alex Runarsson in the summer. The 28-year-old goalkeeper is no longer a part of Mikel Arteta’s plans, and he is looking to let go of the Iceland international ahead of next season.
Runarsson joined the Gunners back in the summer of 2020. He was brought into the club to replace Emiliano Martinez, who was sold to Aston Villa. The 28-year-old shot-stopper made six appearances for Arsenal in the 2020/21 campaign. He was decent in between the sticks for Arteta’s team. The Iceland international kept three clean sheets and conceded seven goals.
While he was a part of the squad for the first season, he did not really have many opportunities. And, post the first season, he has been subject to multiple loan moves. Runarsson has been out on loan at OH Leuven and Alanyaspor over the past two seasons.
Currently, he is playing for Turkish side Alanyaspor and has done a decent job for his team. The 28-year-old has featured in every Super Lig match for the Turkish side. And, has managed to keep four clean sheets in 23 outings.
The former Dijon star is all set to return to his parent club in the summer. Meanwhile, his contract at Arsenal runs until the summer of 2024. However, with around 15 months left in his contract, the Gunners will look to cash in on the Iceland international.
Arsenal, who have been flying high in the ongoing season, have already strengthened their goalkeeping situation. And, they do not really require the services of the 28-year-old shot-stopper. As a result, letting him leave does make sense.
The Gunners signed Matt Turner from New England Revolution last summer. The American international has featured in most of Arsenal’s cup games since arriving at the club. He has turned out in the majority of the Europa League and FA Cup fixtures.
Meanwhile, Mikel Arteta’s first choice in goal has been Aaron Ramsdale. The 24-year-old England international has been their mainstay in the Premier League. He has played every minute of their English top-flight campaign this season as the Gunners push for their first league title in 20 years.
Ramsdale has been one of the best goalkeepers in the ongoing league season. He has kept 12 clean sheets, the joint-most of any goalkeeper in the division. With their goalkeeping situation sorted, it won’t be a surprise if Runarsson ends up leaving in the summer.
