Aston Villa are reportedly keen on signing Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney, a target for Newcastle United, at the end of the season.
According to a report from Football Insider, Aston Villa have joined Newcastle United in the race to sign Scottish international Kieran Tierney from Arsenal at the end of the season.
Tierney has fallen down the pecking order at Arsenal, and he is no longer a key starter for Mikel Arteta. Oleksandr Zinchenko has established himself as the first-choice left-back at the London club. And recent reports have claimed that Arsenal are considering cashing in on the former Celtic defender in the summer.
The 25-year-old is reportedly valued at around £30 million, and it remains to be seen whether Villa are prepared to pay the asking price for him. Unai Emery is looking to strengthen his squad during the summer transfer window, and Tierney could prove to be a quality acquisition for the West Midlands club.
However, Aston Villa will have to face competition from Newcastle United, a club that has considerably more resources than them.
Newcastle are desperate for a quality left-back as well. And Tierney would be a major upgrade on someone like Dan Burn, who is more suited to a central role. The experienced Newcastle United defender has had to operate as the left-back this season.
The 25-year-old Arsenal defender will be hoping to get his career back on track with regular football. And a move to Aston Villa or Newcastle could be ideal for him. That said, Aston Villa already have Alex Moreno and Lucas Digne as the left-back options.
Emery will have to sell one of those players before signing another left-back. Moreno arrived in January. So it is fair to assume that Digne could be the one who could be sold at the end of the season.
Tierney was rated as one of the most promising young defensive talents in European football during his time at Celtic. And he has the quality to develop into a top-class Premier League defender. Regular football at Newcastle United or Aston Villa could help the Scottish international fulfill his tremendous potential.
